A former Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) official, identified as Witness K, has been arrested in connection with an alleged R15m precious stones theft that occurred during a 2023 raid in Killarney, Johannesburg.The suspect is currently held at Germiston holding cells and is set to appear in Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Monday, July 17, 2026.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) confirmed that Witness K was one of two remaining suspects under investigation, following the death of one suspect and the withdrawal of charges against businessman Etienne van der Walt.The case involves allegations of jurisdictional misconduct, unauthorized investigations, and impersonation by suspects.Three other accused, including Kersha Stoltz and Adriaan McKenzie, received bail, while the investigation continues.

The arrest underscores ongoing efforts to address corruption and misconduct within police departments, with Ipid emphasizing the need for accountability in investigative processes.
