Zanzibar Records 69,605 Tourist Arrivals in June 2026 as European Visitors Continue to Lead

Zanzibar recorded 69,605 tourist arrivals in June 2026, marking a 3.1% increase compared with the 67,496 visitors received in June 2025.The figures, released by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, also show a strong recovery from May 2026, when 40,151 tourists visited the islands, representing a month-on-month increase of 73.4% as the peak tourism season gathered momentum.Europe remained Zanzibar's biggest tourism source market, contributing 43,105 visitors or 61.9% of total arrivals.Africa followed with 13,418 visitors (19.3%), while Asia accounted for 6,585 visitors (9.5%).The Americas contributed 5,443 visitors (7.8%) and Oceania 1,042 visitors (1.5%).Most visitors arrived by air, with airports handling 90.1% of all arrivals, while the remaining 9.9% entered through seaports.Holidaymakers continued to dominate the market, with 99.2% of visitors travelling for leisure.The average visitor stayed in Zanzibar for eight days.

Tourism experts credited the continued improvement of airport infrastructure and transport connections between Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania and international destinations for making travel more convenient and attractive.Health services for visitors also remained effective, with 24 tourists treated for minor illnesses during the month before resuming their holidays.Tourism continues to play a vital role in Zanzibar's economy, contributing about 29.2% of the islands' GDP and around 80% of foreign exchange earnings.

The latest arrival figures reinforce the sector's importance as a key driver of economic growth, employment and investment across the archipelago.
