Congress plans leadership transition in Karnataka to address anti-incumbency concerns and strengthen governance strategy
The Congress party’s central leadership is expected to take a decision within the next two to three days regarding the ongoing speculation over a possible leadership change in Karnataka.
The development comes after a key meeting between the party high command, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, which reportedly covered multiple important political matters. These include the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, a possible Cabinet reshuffle, and the MLC elections in the state.
According to party sources, Siddaramaiah has been invited to New Delhi for further discussions, although he stated that he is not aware of the specific agenda of the meeting. He confirmed that he was called by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal regarding the timing and details of the meeting.
At the same time, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar indicated uncertainty over his attendance, saying he would participate only if formally called.
The issue of leadership change has been a recurring theme within Karnataka Congress politics, with supporters of Shivakumar often suggesting that he may eventually take over as Chief Minister, though no such transition has occurred so far.Internal party voices have expressed concern that prolonged uncertainty is affecting the party’s image and governance stability in the state. While discussions continue at the central level, no final decision has yet been announced.
Meanwhile, a minor Cabinet reshuffle has already taken place, including the transfer of the Planning and Statistics portfolio from the Chief Minister to Cabinet Minister K Venkatesh, who has also been given additional responsibilities.Siddaramaiah continues to hold key departments including Finance and Cabinet Affairs, among others. The Congress leadership is expected to weigh multiple political and administrative factors before arriving at a final conclusion.
