Gabriel Pidomson clinches ADC governorship ticket after Rivers State primary election
The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Bauchi State is currently facing a serious internal crisis following its governorship primary election and a court order challenging the process.
The party recently conducted its governorship primary in Bauchi, where Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents Bauchi South, emerged as the candidate.
His emergence came shortly after he reportedly defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PRP and was quickly positioned as the preferred flagbearer.
However, the outcome of the primary has sparked controversy, with a rival aspirant approaching the court to stop the election and also seeking to include the PRP, the senator, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the legal action. The court subsequently issued an order restraining the conduct of the primary, further deepening tensions within the party.
At the same time, a faction within the PRP reportedly announced the removal of the state party chairman, accusing him of breaching due process and irregularly imposing Senator Umar as candidate. The situation has created confusion and division within the party structure in the state.
Speaking on the matter, the leader of Concerned Civil Society Organisations in Bauchi, Najim Nurudeen, argued that courts are generally expected to avoid unnecessary interference in the internal affairs of political parties, except where the law specifically allows it.
He referenced judicial precedents and provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, stressing that political parties have the right to manage their internal processes, including primaries and congresses, within legal limits.
Nurudeen called for the court order to be reviewed and possibly vacated, while urging party members, stakeholders, and citizens to remain calm as the legal and political issues are resolved. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions within PRP in Bauchi as it prepares for the governorship election cycle.
