eThekwini CFO Clarifies Wife’s Role and Employment Process
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini has formally requested the Public Protector to investigate alleged irregularities in the municipality’s soup kitchen programme. The concern centres on claims that the city paid R2 500 for a 10kg bag of samp, an item which normally retails at around R100.
This case is part of a larger R280-million annual contract aimed at supporting 92 soup kitchens across the metro that provide meals for impoverished and homeless residents.
DA eThekwini mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen described the situation as potentially indicative of corruption, financial misconduct, and procurement irregularities.
The DA has called for a thorough investigation into contract awarding, administration, and possible overpricing, as well as health and safety compliance.
In response, the eThekwini municipality did not directly address the claims but emphasised the vital role of soup kitchens, noting that 94 kitchens feed approximately 32 900 beneficiaries each weekday.
The municipality also highlighted its annual budget allocation for groceries, bread, gas, and stipends, and stated that negative portrayals could deter donors and volunteers. They are reportedly reviewing the programme’s model to address economic pressures and demand. The DA continues to push for accountability and transparency in the spending of taxpayer funds and the management of the soup kitchen programme.
