Rivers State Government Moves to Resolve Bille Gas Leakage and Upgrade Local Health Facility
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Authority has expanded its clean cooking initiative, providing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and health insurance to over 10,000 households in Bwari Area Council. The program, a collaboration with IHS Nigeria, aims to reduce indoor air pollution caused by traditional cooking fuels like firewood and charcoal.Beneficiaries reported significant improvements in health, with reduced respiratory issues and lower household energy costs.Gas refills cost N4,000 per cylinder, lasting a family of six over a month, compared to daily firewood expenses of N1,200–N1,500.Over 2,000 participants also enrolled in a one-year health insurance scheme for free healthcare. The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals to promote cleaner energy and reduce emissions.Officials, traditional leaders, and residents celebrated the move, which also included baby care packs for women.
The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that indoor air pollution from polluting fuels causes respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and premature deaths, disproportionately affecting women and children. This program addresses these risks while improving productivity for small-scale food vendors.
