India has expressed cautious monitoring of Bangladesh's plans to develop the Teesta River with Chinese assistance, emphasizing its focus on regional developments.
During Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to China, both nations agreed on cooperation for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project.China also outlined plans for the China-Bangladesh-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CBMEC), which could grant China direct access to the Bay of Bengal.
Indian officials, including External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, stated that India tracks all regional developments and will take 'appropriate measures' in response.
Concerns include potential Chinese access to sensitive areas near the 'chicken's neck' region, which connects northeastern states to the mainland.
India previously signaled interest in conserving the Teesta River within Bangladesh, as the two nations lack a water-sharing agreement for this cross-border river.The CBMEC, if completed, could significantly alter regional power dynamics, prompting India's vigilance.
