INEC prepares for Osun election amid PVC theft concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured voters in Osun that the recent theft of PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards) will not disrupt the upcoming election. In a statement, INEC's chief press secretary, Mr.

Ifeanyi Oketola, confirmed that 4,427 BVAS (Biometric Voter Authentication System) devices have been configured for the election, with 664 backup units ready to replace any stolen or damaged equipment.

The commission has also established 97 Super Registration Area Centres (Super RACs) and 105 Registration Area Centres across the state, which will be activated the night before election day.

Oketola emphasized that the BVAS technology, which requires biometric verification, has eliminated the possibility of ghost voters, as no one can use another person's PVC to cast a vote.He assured registered voters that administrative measures will be taken to ensure no one is disenfranchised, even if their PVC is stolen. The attack on the PVC collection center has raised security concerns, but INEC remains confident in its preparedness.Stakeholders are urged to collaborate with the commission to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

The incident highlights the challenges of securing electoral materials in Nigeria, but INEC's backup plans and technology-driven approach aim to mitigate risks and uphold electoral integrity.
