Karachi introduces e-challan system for lane discipline enforcement on Sharea Faisal starting June 1

The Karachi Traffic Police have announced the launch of an electronic challan (e-challan) system targeting lane violations on Sharea Faisal, one of the city’s busiest arteries, effective from June 1.

The initiative is part of a broader traffic management plan aimed at improving lane discipline and reducing congestion through strict enforcement using surveillance cameras already installed along the corridor.

According to traffic police officials, all motorists will be required to strictly follow designated lane rules, and violations will automatically result in e-challans issued through the monitoring system.Under the new arrangement, specific lanes will be assigned for different types of vehicles.Motorcycles, buses, rickshaws, Mazdas, and other light transport vehicles will be required to use the two leftmost lanes.Meanwhile, the remaining lanes will be reserved for faster-moving traffic, including cars and double-cabin vehicles.Authorities have emphasized that the system is designed to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce accidents caused by improper lane usage.

DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah stated that the enforcement will initially focus on Sharea Faisal, where the necessary surveillance infrastructure is already operational. The system will rely on camera networks to detect violations and issue automated e-tickets to offenders.

Officials also confirmed that fines have been categorized by vehicle type, with motorbikes and rickshaws facing penalties of Rs2,500, while buses may be fined Rs7,500 for lane violations.

Traffic authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with the new rules and maintain discipline on the roads, highlighting that compliance is essential for the success of the initiative and for improving overall traffic conditions in Karachi.
