Opposition warns of possible withdrawal from assemblies over treatment of Imran Khan

Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who leads the opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly and heads the Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), has warned that the opposition alliance may consider quitting parliamentary assemblies if the government does not change its approach towards former prime minister Imran Khan.

Speaking during a programme on Dawn News titled “Doosra Rukh”, Achakzai expressed concern that the prevailing political and legal treatment of Imran Khan is making it difficult for opposition parties to continue participating in legislative forums.

He questioned the allegations and severe legal actions being discussed against Imran Khan, including references to long prison sentences and even trial in a military court, stating that such measures appear excessive for someone who, according to him, is only demanding the return of his “snatched mandate”.He criticised the idea of subjecting a political leader to military court proceedings and raised concerns about fairness and democratic norms.

Achakzai further stated that if the PTI central committee decides to withdraw from assemblies in Punjab, Sindh, and the federal level while continuing governance only in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, such a decision would likely be implemented.

He also lamented that parliamentary participation has little value if opposition leaders are not even allowed meetings with incarcerated political figures.

He warned that the opposition has been left with few options and even suggested that a boycott of the upcoming budget session is under consideration if conditions remain unchanged.

Highlighting the strength of PTI’s representation with around 50 to 60 seats, he cautioned that any withdrawal could significantly impact parliamentary functioning. He added that political tensions are pushing the opposition towards a point where remaining in assemblies may no longer seem viable.
