Bureau of Meteorology forecasts warmer and drier winter for much of Australia amid possible El Niño
Australians on the east coast can expect a wet few days as a low-pressure trough moves through, bringing showers, storms, and minor flooding in areas like the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers in NSW.The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued minor flood warnings and advises residents to avoid flooded waterways.Sydney is forecast to see showers with a high of 22°C, while Melbourne will experience a foggy, cool day with highs around 17°C.Southern Queensland, including Brisbane and Toowoomba, will see wet conditions, and Adelaide will have easing showers with a top of 19°C.In contrast, Perth is set for sunny conditions and 25°C.
Despite this short-term wet spell, the BoM's long-range forecast for June to August predicts a warmer and drier winter across much of the country, with below-average rainfall expected in south-east Queensland, coastal NSW, South Australia, and eastern Tasmania.Western Tasmania could receive above-average rainfall. There is also a 70% chance of higher-than-normal maximum temperatures nationwide.
Early indications suggest the potential formation of a 'Super El Niño' towards the end of winter, which may exacerbate hot and dry conditions in Australia.
