4-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Quetta and Surrounding Areas, No Casualties Reported
A 4-magnitude earthquake struck Quetta, Ziarat, and surrounding regions of Balochistan on Saturday, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC). The earthquake's epicenter was located 37 kilometers northeast of Quetta, at a depth of 15 kilometers. No casualties or structural damage were reported immediately after the tremors. The NSMC, under the Pakistan Meteorological Department, noted that the quake was relatively minor compared to a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that shook Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Punjab last month. That earlier quake, originating in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountain range at a depth of 215 kilometers, also caused no casualties. Experts highlight that Pakistan's location along the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it prone to seismic activity, with historical records showing multiple devastating quakes. While the recent event was not severe, it underscores the country's vulnerability to earthquakes, prompting reminders of past disasters and ongoing preparedness efforts.
